Generative engine optimization consulting should leave a boutique firm with a query set, source baseline, citation evidence, documented page changes, measurement record, and handback. The query set defines what the firm checks. The baseline records the sources available before edits. Citation evidence records what an answer displayed, without claiming why it appeared. The page-change record connects each edit to a query and source gap. The measurement record preserves the observed result and its conditions. The handback gives the firm these materials in a form it can inspect. None of them is a promise of citation. Google states that meeting its requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving (Google Search Central).

What should a GEO consultant deliver?

Ask the consultant to name each deliverable in the proposal and show what the firm receives at handback. This is a Jungle Roots buying checklist, not an industry standard.

DeliverableWhat the firm should receiveEvidence, not promise
Query setThe exact buyer questions included in the workThe recorded questions define what was checked. They do not guarantee that an engine will use the firm's pages.
Source baselineThe source URLs available before page changesThe baseline records available sources. It does not prove that an engine retrieved or relied on them.
Citation evidenceThe captured answer and every visible cited URLThe capture proves what the interface displayed under the recorded conditions. It does not prove why a source was selected.
Page changesA record of the page, changed text, query, and supporting sourceThe record proves what changed. It does not promise a citation, ranking, or referral.
Measurement recordThe query, engine, date, answer, mention, citation, and evidence locationThe record supports a dated observation. It does not turn that observation into a forecast.
HandbackThe query set, baseline, evidence, change record, and measurement recordThe inventory proves what the firm received. It does not transfer an unstated result guarantee.

A proposal passes this screen when the firm can point to the files it will receive and tell evidence apart from an expected result. A phrase such as "improve AI visibility" is an objective. It is not a deliverable until the proposal names the record that will show what the consultant checked and changed.

How should a boutique firm define the query set?

The query set should contain the exact questions the firm wants the consultant to check. Keep the wording with the record so a reader can connect each captured answer to the question that produced it.

Use the query set to record:

  • The exact buyer question.
  • The service or decision named in that question.
  • The engine where the question was entered.
  • The captured answer tied to that wording.
  • The visible sources attached to that answer.

Do not turn a rewritten question into a continuation of the original observation. Preserve the old wording with its evidence and record the new wording separately. The purpose is not to claim that one prompt represents every buyer. It is to keep the evidence attached to the question that was actually checked.

The consultant should return the query set itself, not only a summary score derived from it. A firm cannot inspect an observation when the underlying question is missing.

What belongs in the source baseline and citation evidence?

The source baseline should list the pages available for each query before the consultant changes them. Citation evidence should then preserve what the answer displayed. These records answer different questions.

  • The source baseline answers, "Which relevant source pages could the firm identify before the edits?"
  • The citation evidence answers, "Which sources did the captured answer visibly cite?"
  • A source in the baseline is not a citation until the captured answer displays it.
  • A citation is not proof that the cited page caused the answer or that the engine will cite it again.

Official engine guidance supports a narrow eligibility check. Google says its existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Its examples include crawl access, internal links, important content in text, and structured data that matches visible text (Google Search Central). OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search results, while GPTBot is used for content that may be used to train its generative AI foundation models (OpenAI).

Those documents support checks of access and source readiness. They do not support a promise that a page will be selected or cited.

Which page changes should the consulting record contain?

The page-change record should let the firm trace an edit back to a query and a source. Record the page, the changed text, the query it addresses, and the source that supports the claim. Then state the evidence the firm will inspect after the change.

Keep these distinctions in the record:

  1. The query identifies the buyer question in scope.
  2. The source supports the wording placed on the page.
  3. The page change records what the consultant edited.
  4. The later capture records what the engine displayed.
  5. The consultant labels any explanation of the change as a hypothesis unless the evidence proves it.

Google advises site owners to make content findable through internal links and to keep important content in text. Google also says that structured data should match the visible text (Google Search Central). These statements can support a documented page check. They do not guarantee that the edited page will appear.

For the page-level review, use the auditable website checklist. For the capture method, use the AI visibility audit guide. Both keep the work tied to inspectable pages and evidence.

How should the consultant keep the measurement record?

The measurement record should preserve the observed answer beside the conditions of the check. At minimum, keep the exact query, engine, date, answer, visible mention, visible citation, cited URL, and evidence location.

Use plain observation labels:

  • "Absent" means the captured answer did not name the firm.
  • "Mentioned" means the captured answer named the firm.
  • "Cited" means the captured answer displayed a source link from the declared domain.
  • "Unknown" means the available capture does not support a verdict.

These labels are Jungle Roots editorial definitions for the record. They are not engine standards. Do not replace an unknown with a zero, and do not describe a mention as a citation.

Google reports appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode within overall Search Console web traffic (Google Search Central). That documentation does not make Search Console a query-level citation record. Keep the captured answer and visible source evidence with the consultant's measurement record.

What should the handback contain?

The handback should contain the working materials named in the proposal. The firm should receive the query set, source baseline, citation captures, page-change record, and measurement record in inspectable form.

Before accepting the handback, check that:

  • Each captured answer points to its exact query.
  • Each source claim points to the page that supports it.
  • Each page edit points to the query or source gap it addresses.
  • Each citation verdict points to the captured answer and visible URL.
  • Each unsupported field remains unknown rather than becoming an estimate.
  • Each expected result is labeled as a goal or hypothesis, not as evidence.

The handback is complete when the firm can inspect the chain without relying on an unstated promise from the consultant. It does not need a claim that the work secured a citation. It needs a faithful record of the questions, sources, changes, observations, and limits that the engagement produced.

Is SEO being phased out?

The cited Google guidance says that its existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It names crawl access, internal links, textual content, page experience, and matching structured data as relevant practices (Google Search Central).

For a consulting buyer, this means a GEO proposal should show how page changes relate to the firm's existing search foundation. It should not sell GEO as permission to ignore whether a source can be found, read, and understood.

How much does it cost to hire someone to do SEO?

This evidence packet does not support a market price, and this article does not restate one. Ask each consultant to quote against the same query set, source baseline, citation evidence, page-change record, measurement record, and handback.

A quote without those named outputs cannot show which part of the requested work it covers. Keep the commercial figure beside the included deliverables and exclusions supplied by the consultant. Do not fill a missing price or scope with an estimate.

What is the best agency for generative engine optimization?

There is no universal best agency established by the sources used here. For a boutique consulting firm, evaluate the proposed work against the deliverables in this guide. Ask to see the exact query set, the source baseline, the citation evidence format, the page-change record, the measurement record, and the handback inventory.

The useful decision is whether the proposal gives your firm evidence it can inspect. A claim that an agency will secure citations is still a promise until a dated capture records a citation.

Is SEO still worth it in 2026?

That business judgment depends on the firm's buyers and acquisition path, so no universal return claim is supported here. Google does state that existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant to its AI features (Google Search Central).

A boutique firm can make the decision concrete by asking whether the proposed work improves a source page and leaves a measurement record for a buyer question the firm cares about. The record can support a later decision. It cannot guarantee a return.

Is SEO a high income skill?

This evidence packet contains no compensation data, so it cannot support an income claim. A firm hiring a GEO consultant should assess the contracted outputs, not infer delivery quality from a salary or billing label.

Ask whether the consultant will return the query set, source baseline, citation evidence, page changes, measurement record, and handback. Those are inspectable buying criteria. They are not evidence about a person's income.

Is AI replacing SEO?

The official sources used here do not support treating AI search as a replacement for search fundamentals. Google says that existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant to its AI features (Google Search Central). OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT search results and gives site owners a separate control for GPTBot training use (OpenAI).

For a buyer, the boundary is practical. GEO consulting can add a query set, citation evidence, and a measurement record around generated answers. It still needs source pages that the relevant system can access.
